The Alsham Bakery
28th January 2018
I had the privilege of visiting Mohamed Ghnaimi at The Alsham Bakery in Cork. Mohamed is originally from Syria and had his tiling business it all stopped when the war broke out. He and his family fled Syria without anything and came to Ireland in 2015 however his sisters are married and still in Syria and hoped that one day they will be able to come to Ireland and be together again .
We had to start out lives all over again, I didn’t want to get money from the government. I want to provide for my family like I did in Lebanon.
I was struck by the utter determination of Mohamed to make a life for himself and his family. He told me that he had been in the bakery since 3am that morning.
The Irish people have been so kind to us . I use Odlums Flour because it’s Irish and I want to give back to Ireland.
- Loading the machine
- Cutting the dough
- Dough going into the overn
- Dough is cooked in a fire oven
- On the racks after coming out of the oven
- Packed and ready for the shops
Syrian people really like this bread, we eat it everyday . My dream is to see this bread in Irish shops.
As Mohamed was telling me this a new order came in from a Irish Shop.
I will never forget the joy I saw on his face as as his dreams were becoming a reality.
Mohamed can be contacted by email
